While I am genuinely interested in plant-microbe interactions, my research currently focuses on a project with the yellow mountain-aven (Dryas drummondii). Dryas drummondii belongs to the Actinorhiza plants which can engage in root nodule symbiosis (RNS) with so-called Frankia bacteria. Dryas drummondii is especially interesting as it belongs to the Rosaceae. While almost 100 Rosaceae genera are known, nodules were only found in four of them, namely Cercocarpus (mountain mahogany), Chamaebatia (mountain misery), Dryas (Mountain Aven), and Purshia (bitterbrush), all beloning to the Dryadoideae subfamily. In addition, the genus Dryas is small and D. drummondii is the only Dryas species engaging in RNS. In this project, we aim to characterize RNS in Dryas and to identify the genetic basis of the loss of RNS in as Dryas species.
